Scrapbook technique #1 - Grunge & Distress

Hello Fellow Scrapbloggers!

Today I want to share with you a technique that is popular in scrapbooking called “distressing.” It’s an easy way to add texture and interest to your scrapblog pages.

You can take your pages from:

To this:

To create this look, I chose to start with a theme - I’m using the QUEEN of EVERYTHING card template that Jen created for Mother’s day. I am only using page three of this template. When you select a theme, all the stickers and backgrounds used to create the theme are added to your tray. For this theme, three coordinating backgrounds are included:

Distressing and “grunge” are about messing up clean, crisp images. In the paperworld, you can use ink and other tools and in scrapblog, you can layer stickers to get the effect that you want. For this page, I chose to swap out the light cream color background with a darker brown one that came with the theme. Next, we want to find some stickers that will help to create the distressed look. Click the stickers tab and then click “get stickers.” On the left, you will see three links, click the “style” link.

Here you will find “distressed” and “grunge” labels. These are special tags we’ve added to stickers to help you better find what you are looking for. Choose “grunge” for this project. These are some of my all time favorite stickers.

You can choose one or several and just start adding them to your page. Don’t worry that you are going to mess up! Unlike ink, digital distressing can be undone easily, just by clicking on the “undo” arrow in the right hand corner of the Scrapblog builder canvas.

Another fun way to add texture and that distressed look to your pages is to add some metal stickers. In the Scrapblog Marketplace, under the “stores” tab, we have a new store that offers high quality, beautiful metal stickers. On page 3 of the stores tab, click “Vintaj” Here you will find unique brass, silver and copper sticker elements that will add texture and depth to your pages.

I added a couple of stickers and replaced the existing frame with one of the metal stickers from Vintaj. I spent 90 credits ($1.80) and I have a beautiful page as well as unique stickers that I can use again and again on other creations.

Was this technique helpful to you? Leave a comment! Share your distressed and grungy scrapblogs by tagging them distressed.

What Can You Do With a Poppet®?

April 13, 2009 | In: Profiles, Scrapblog Marketplace | By Rebecca

1. Tell us a little about yourself and answer this question - What is a Poppet®?

I am an artist, author and illustrator. I create custom artworks for clients using photos of their heads combined with my retro whimsical style of collage. I live in Washington DC with my husband Paul and our pets!

A Poppet® is my retro whimsical style of making art. I began creating the Poppet® artworks in 2002 after a long dry spell in my art making. I was stuck and wanted to try something new. After about a year of experimentation, and finally, a break through the creative block, I arrived at the Poppet® style of collage.
I decided that these new works needed a name and I wanted the name to be a little silly and unusual.

My English grandmother used to use the word “poppet” as a term of endearment saying to me “don’t worry little poppet everything is going to be OK.” And since these artworks make me feel happy, safe and young — the name fit perfectly.

This new way of working, beckoned me back into the creative process and the thrill of creating simply for fun.

2. What inspires your art?

I am inspired by so many things, folk art, retro magazine ads, color palettes, just about anything can be a source of inspiration.

3. Why did you want to bring your art to Scrapblog?

I wanted to bring my art to Scrapblog so that people could play in my whimsical world

4. What do you love the most about Scrapblog?

I love that you can make and share your creations virtually but if you want to you can have them printed too!!

5. Who is going to win American Idol this season?

I haven’t been watching - I only like to watch at the beginning of the season where they show all the really bad people

6. Finish this sentence “I can’t live without…”

making art!

7. What makes you laugh?

usually I end up laughing at myself

8. What’s the one thing you are looking forward to this summer?

Not having to wear a big puffy jacket just to go outside!

9. Is your craft room organized or unorganized?

it is semi organized. i work in a small space so I have to keep it somewhat tidy. but I have bins for my papers and in the bins the papers are just thrown in and not neatly put away, so it’s organized chaos!

10. Why is scrapbooking important?

to preserve your memories, a diary of you life and to be creative!!!

11. Do you like jelly beans?

Yes but not the black licorice flavored ones!! I hate black licorice!
