The Blog

Thanks for the memories

March 6, 2008 | In: Community | By Alex

Has it already been over a year? Time has flown by and so much has changed! When I first joined Scrapblog as the “Community Guy,” which was about the friendliest title we could think of, we still hadn’t launched our website and were working day and night behind the “bubblewrap”. Since then, it has been one of the most fun and personally rewarding work experiences I’ve had.

Wait, did I say work? Well, there was some of that, but interacting with the community was far from work … it was rewarding time. I’ve met so many great people, in the US, in Brazil and in other countries. I’ve made friendships. And I’ve connected with people across various other social networks. I’ve also helped countless others with questions and tips. Some of the best experiences were when I would meet someone and they would say “you’re with Scrapblog? I love your service!” There was so much more to it, though, including strategizing, developing products, putting in processes, communicating with the press, general management … those were the work bits. These memories count for so much, as well as my own that I shared as a community member.

But in addition to Scrapblog, I am involved in other community building, teaching and consulting activities. I’ve been organizing and running wonderful BarCampMiami events, I teach Social Media at the University of Miami, I co-organize RefreshMiami web meetups, and, more significantly from a career perspective, I consult to companies on social media. These activities are taking on increased importance, and I have decided to focus more on these areas. This is an exciting time and I’m now setting sail on a new direction.

I will miss my colleagues, partners and suppliers, but I am sure that we will be seeing each other again. It has been great fun working with Scrapblog and I am sure that we will remain in close contact.

I won’t be gone entirely, though, as I will remain as a consultant with Scrapblog and of course, as an active community member! :))

    Alex,

I’ve already told you how much I’ll miss you, but at the same time I’m really excited for what awaits you!

I still remember the day you selected my ‘Dreamin’ of the Beach’ scrapblog for The Friday Five. I remember telling you how I cried the whole time I made that scrapblog, because I missed my son so much… and the very next day you selected the scrapblog for The Friday Five! I was stunned that someone at Scrapblog even noticed it, because I had just published it the night before! That one simple act of kindness meant the world to me! This is just one example of how you touched my heart and I’m sure other users have similar stories to tell.

I wish you all the best, Alex… and I’ll be ’seeing’ you on Scrapblog!

    Lots of love to you,

    Karen

Alex…though is sad that we wont have you here, is understandable that people as talented as you are have to move in life. I can say with total certainty that you are one (if not *the* one) of the most talented guys I have come across in my life [which isn’t short!!! ;) ] and you deserve all the success that life will bring you….

I hust hope we can still follow your work (I am the greatest fan of your photgraphy, so I really hope you still keep giving us updates of your Flickr!!!) and you have a place in London or Trancoso whenever the opportunity turns up….
you most certainly have a place in our hearts!

Thanks for all the patience and support you gave us when first starting here, thanks for the attention (which I was honoured and flattered to recieve!!!) and the chance to have *met* someone like you….
people like you make the world a much, much better place….

    Alex,

You have grown and accomplished so much in the past year. You have the instinct and talent for a career in “online community service.” You will do extremely well in coming years, Alex. Good luck to you.

What do you have to say?
