So, what’s that community guy supposed to be doing?
I’ve been here two days and I feel like I have the best job in the world. Mind you, I’m still going through the learning curve and I don’t think it’ll be the easiest job in the world … far from it. But it’s exactly what I want to be doing and it feels like I’ve been waiting a long time for this.
But enough about me already, because this job is not about me at all: it’s about you. Yes, *you*, as in Time’s Person of the Year 2006, You:
“…look at 2006 through a different lens and you’ll see another story, one that isn’t about conflict or great men. It’s a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before [emphasis mine]. It’s about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people’s network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It’s about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes”.”And we didn’t just watch, we also worked. Like crazy. We made Facebook profiles and Second Life avatars and reviewed books at Amazon and recorded podcasts. We blogged about our candidates losing and wrote songs about getting dumped. We camcordered bombing runs and built open-source software.”
Together with Carlos and our team, I’m here to help you do just that, by listening to you, understanding your needs, responding to your requests and identifying features that will make Scrapblog better for you. And that’s fine by us, because we love to meet new people, to engage in conversations, to be exposed to and learn from new ideas and to find ways to improve products and services.
And I personally want to do everything I can to make your voice heard when it comes to improving Scrapblog. Let me be the first to say that I think we’re launching a *great* product in a couple of weeks. Like many of you, I’ve used the existing version of Scrapblog to retouch images online, to create digital scrapbooks and to share them with friends, and I already thought to myself, “hey, this is pretty nifty”.
But then I had a sneak peak at what we’re launching soon … and it blows the existing version clear out of the water, it’s that good! But you’ll be the ultimate judge of that, and you’ll know better what is right and wrong with the product, so I’ll be all ears.
Some of the other parts of my job sound more official, and include:
- Developing, communicating and executing Scrapblog’s growth strategy, including the definition of objectives, milestones, steps and resources required;
- Becoming a public face for Scrapblog and working with product teams, business development teams and product managers from other companies to identify and engage with related communities;
- Identifying, pursuing and closing partnerships that will extend Scrapblog to other online communities;
- Identifying product development functionality and features that will help Scrapblog grow and/or achieve greater user experience and satisfaction;
- Working closely with the company’s marketing, communications and PR vendors and in liaison with internal team-members to make sure that Scrapblog’s interests are protected and its users’ culture is correctly conveyed.
We went back and forth over what my ‘title’ should be — and maybe we shouldn’t use titles for jobs anymore, but rather tags, but that’s a separate post — and we agreed on “Community Guy”. Actually, the community came up with the title (which is different than coming up with a name … haha). And we like it. I like it.
So, out with the stuffy titles (See today’s article in AdAge: “Death of the Rock Star CMO“) and in with the friendly ones!
Oh, one more thing … won’t you say hi? I’ll never be very far, since I’m also here, and here and here, for starters. And the best place to have conversations about Scrapblog are on this blog and within the upcoming Scrapblog community spaces.
I look forward to meeting you!

What are people saying?
Oh, congrats
Sounds like you are the community face of the business, the Project Manager, the Product Manager, the Defect Control Manager, the Quality Manager, the Public Relations Manager, and (let’s see… did I leave anything out? Guess not!)
Big shoes to fill, and a lot of pairs of shoes. I hope the ones you physically wear are nice and comfy - sounds like you have some long hours ahead!
Rob
Thanks, Rob, and thanks for your earlier thoughts on Shel’s blog. I won’t be wearing all the hats you listed above but I hope that by working closely with these respective roles we can create serendipity.
As I’ve done community stuff for a few years now, I tell people my job is a mashup of the following:
1. Community interaction/outreach.
2. Grassroots Marketing.
3. Customer Service.
4. PR.
Just make sure you check with Jake McKee about being called “Community Guy”. Perhaps you can be the “Community Dude”.
Best of luck wearing all of those hats!
Thanks, Damon!
We’ve got a great PR guy and I’ll be working closely with him, so that’s not one of my hats.
Community Dude? It has a syllable too many, which makes it awkward to say …
[…] I apologize for not communicating more about BarcampMiami, but with the new job, I’ve been pretty busy. But thanks to the help of Kim Grinfeder, who has secured the sponsorship as well as provided the venue, we’re still very much on track for BarcampMIami on February 21st. I’ve arranged for the catering and have a local printer that is giving us good prices for printing t-shirts. A number of people have started to sign up (password=c4mp) and others have expressed interest in presenting. […]
What do you have to say?
