Ken Burns effect

January 16, 2008 | In: New Features | By Alex

Today’s been a feature fiesta day! In addition to the updated website, we’ve just added the Ken Burns effect to the Builder. From Wikipedia:

The Ken Burns Effect is a popular name introduced by Apple Computer [1] in 2003 for a feature in its iMovie 3 software. The feature enables a widely used technique of embedding still photographs in motion pictures, displayed with slow zooming and panning effects, and fading transitions between them. The name derives from extensive use of the technique by American documentarian Ken Burns.

You may see it in action in this scrapblog (click on play):

To add the Ken Burns effect to your scrapblog, just click the checkbox on the bottom when you’re in the Builder. And do tell us if you like it!

I think the ‘Ken Burns Effect’ works well with some subjects- landscapes and seascapes are an obvious choice. However, I’ve just experimented with ‘The Scottish Highlands’ and I’m not convinced I’ve improved my album. The results seem rather jerky and I’m getting some strange (and not necessarily better) overlapping. I think it may work best on ‘whole page’ photos?! Also-does the ‘transition’ have to be set to anything in particular?

I’ve always loved the Ken Burns effect on iPhoto, and I’m thrilled to see it as an option on Scrapblog. Thanks!
